Yoke Shire "Masque of Shadows" Reviews

Yoke Shire is a three-piece Boston area progressive band.  Leader Craig Herlihy wrote a majority of the material, produced the album and plays everything from the conventional (guitars, bass and keyboards) to the more exotic (flutes, Theremin and dulcimer), in addition to handling the lead vocals.  Rounding out the trio are brother Brian Herlihy on guitars and drummer Brad Dillon.

The group makes a point of stating that the recording uses no sampling, sequencing or drum machines, a policy that carries over to their live shows, where the various members play multiple instruments in any given song.

Stylistically, the feel is very seventies and brings to mind Jethro Tull in their "Benefit" / "Thick as a Brick" days.  Cuts such as "Black Tower" and "Shape of a Dancer" in particular have a heavy, multi-tracked guitar sound that was a mainstay of Tull during that period. …the material is well-produced, complex, ever-changing and full of lengthy instrumental sections, and the wide variety of instruments used makes for an excellent progressive rock release that leans more towards the guitar rather than the traditional keyboards of the genre.  A very strong debut.
